MEXICO
The City cannot be encapsulated by a formal, uniform system, justified by the preferential treatment of one argument over another; of static relations that prolong singularities, uniformity and inflexible conditions in general. The city of fixed rules and forms of organization and territorial control, possession, and absolute demarcation of the territory. A broken city, where the space –institutional or physical– is determined as ‘proper’ and serves as a basis from which any externality is understood as a series of threats and everything different is grouped as “the other” and its places as Voids. If one understands the city as a system of networks that are defined by both physically discernible and invisible ruptures, its material form, social fabric, and the mechanisms that influence its development, are all laced with irreconcilable differences. It is in the so-called Urban Voids where incidentally unrelated parts coexist in a never-ending interplay of differences. They are moments with the highest potential and richness, it is when the occupations and forces of one system meet and interact with those from another. This way, we shift from a world of geometric boundaries and stable borders and distinctions to one of multidimensional transference and network effects. The Mexican participation in TAL’07 will consist in diverse urban tactics distributed throughout Lisbon developed by: Rodrigo Alcocer, María Alós, Gustavo Artigas, Raúl Cárdenas, Teddy Cruz, Minerva Cuevas, Iván Hernández, Jonathan Hernández, Homeless, Morris, Fernando Ortega, Miguel Robles-Durán, S, Tercerunquinto, Wakal, and Taro Zorrilla. We searched for ways of operating without a ‘proper’ place, that depend on time and not in place. Tactics that don’t make a unit, but remain interconnected. These urban activities, at the same time transitory, temporary and ephemeral, challenge the ‘proper’ places of the city and assimilate complex relationships. Our place belongs to ‘the other’; we will occupy interstitial spaces and will depend on seized opportunities, on cleverly chosen moments, and on the rapidity of movements that change the organization of a space.
